The New Wyze Cam Outdoor - First Look and Impressions
The Wyze Outdoor Cameras have been leaked to the public through a filing at the FCC. We have all kinds of release details about the Wyze Cam Outdoor, the Wyze Cam Outdoor base station, and the entire system and setup.
We still don't have all the details with the #Wyze #Outdoor #Camera but we do have a ton to offer you about these new cameras coming from the Wyze team.

How far is the range from the base station? I have a metal roof so I wonder how much that will affect the range.
Automate Your Life
Automate Your Life 9 months ago
I can't give you that definitively just yet. That's something I need to test myself, but I've read up to 120 ft in open air. Walls and objects bring that down considerably though.

There is other ways to keep the unit powered all the time and never lose any power. That battery is way too small we can fix that issue a small modification. Use a small alarm battery which is usually 12 V 3 A This usually will run on alarm panel on emergency back up for 12 to 15 hours approximately based on how many devices are running on this alarm system. But since we're only running 5 V this alarm battery should run the camera for at least two weeks. Now you just need a 5 V regulator. And a solar battery charger from a solar panel which you can pick up on Amazon.

I would like to see Poe. This way you can run your Ethernet cable and power the wireless space station and mount it inside of a weatherproof plastic box and still have wireless connection. By leaving the base station inside you will lose half of your wireless connection outside if you can move the box outside inside of a weatherproof box your wireless connection will reach twice as far. Around my house I currently run four separate ubiquity long range wireless access points.

It's that distance that will kill a lot of folks, so you may need to take a tact like this with the base station. It'll be interesting to see what we have to do with larger homes. With the base stations only be $10, some folks may just buy 2.

I have had 2 Wyze Cams on my front porch for almost 2 years now - they have worked great, no issues. One is right next to a Ring Doorbell, the other is attached the the front porch ceiling. They are powered by a USB cord which is plugged into a porch light USB socket. The temperature here ranges from 98 to minus 5 degrees. No issues. Person notification works great. I wish notification speed was a bit faster, but the Wyze cams are a lot faster than the Ring. I'm a satisfied Wyze customer.

Are you sure? That doesn't look weatherproof at all. What's the point of a base station? Micro-USB for an outdoor camera?
Automate Your Life
Automate Your Life 10 months ago
The Micro USB port looks to be the only real entry point for water and/or moisture to me. I'm not 100% but that's my sense. The base station is going to be an aggregator as far as I can tell, but it has a few uses.

I used to love my Wyze cameras, but their web interface has went to crap and it seems to get worse with every update. No longer can I quickly check a camera or a recording as it's now a crapshoot whether or not it will even connect at all, let alone well enough to get a decent picture.

@Automate Your Life Thanks. You're probably right but it's frustrating that my same crappy wifi used to be adequate.
Automate Your Life
Automate Your Life 10 months ago
Hey Andy, that sounds frustrating! I want to help. The honest truth though is that Wyze's WiFi connectivity is one of the first to drop off when we start to struggle with our home WiFi. For myself, getting Nest WiFi was a big turning point for my Wyze products.
KingGene
KingGene 10 months ago
Not trying to hate on this but it just seems like they are heading in all the wrong places if you ask me. It does not even look anything close to what I would have imagined. I did not hear anything about the weatherproofing of the camera? The look is not great either. A battery option is good if you do not want to have to hardwired the camera into a power source, but who want to have to charge the thing? I just think with all those smart people working for Wyze that came up with the original camera and have come out with so many other devices since then that they could have by now came up with a winner in the amount of time that they have been working on this. Come on now.
KingGene
KingGene 10 months ago
I thought the whole point was to build and outdoor weatherproof camera that did not need any additional enclosure? Heck if that is the case they just needed to create a weatherproof enclosure that would work with the lense and infrared lights it has. Also if they were going to make a base station they should make that with a storage drive that way any cameras link to it would have local storage. I think the whole point of people using these cameras are that they are affordable and that they do not want to have to pay someone to store activity. In addition I’m not 100% sold on there event recording I would rather have it work off of motion rather than changing pixelation because I see mine record win there’s change in heat on the grass and surface areas which is strange. It’s almost like watching water moving.
Automate Your Life
Automate Your Life 10 months ago
Good comments Gene and I think we have to see whether or not it's fully weatherproofed. I don't think it's 100%, but I think the battery options are very important to many. One thing that might help you understand where this came from...Wyze's V2 camera is not an original design and most of their hardware come from other designs. They're not really a hardware company, yet. Although I see learning.

I have my doubts it will run for "months or up to a year" on it's internal battery, unless the camera they use uses a "lot" less amps than their Wyze Cam V2. I connected the Wyze Cam V2 to a 20,000 Ah USB power bank and it ran the battery down in 3 days. I connected that same power bank to a Reolink Argus 2 camera and it ran it for 6 months.
Automate Your Life

I had the same thought initially, but when you look at other systems that have been optimized for outdoor situations, they can achieve that kind of performance on one charge. You're absolutely right in terms of a direct mAh comparison. It's not even close. Days is exactly right.

Sounds good. In California most houses have the house power panel outside. Were I a thief the first thing I would do is shut down the whole house power. That eliminates any camera system that needs AC power, a router, and a modem. I think it's great that the Wyze Outdoor camera will be battery powered and have a microSD to record locally.

Duck Landes
Duck Landes 11 months ago
Wyze Labs is based in Seattle, Washington. The Wyze Cam V2 I have says "Made in China" on the bottom. So I would suspect their new camera will also be manufactured in China. EPA regulations, high taxes, and union wages have driven most manufacturing out of the U.S. It's hard to compete with a country like China that cares nothing about air quality and pollution, and allows slave labor.

Thanks for this, did you find a charge controller inside? Wondering if they’re building it so we can attach a small solar pane to them to keep the battery charged because if you have to run a power cable to it then what’s the point of doing all this work with a base station? Why no poe? Why no Ethernet port on the camera itself? They’ve got to have done kind of plan to keep these things charged other than a direct AC adapter connection
Automate Your Life
Automate Your Life 11 months ago
There's an SD card on board too Jason! Could be both have a base station, so I'm betting multiple different configurations.
Jason M
Jason M 11 months ago
Automate Your Life yes, you can get a lot of different adapters for PoE, easy to connect an adapter that bucks the voltage down to 5V. I think we may see smaller power usage on the camera (after rewatching your discussion of the battery) than the V2 because the SD-card isn’t on board anymore so it just has to transmit the images to the base station and that’s where they’re saved to the card. Saving and deleting/writing over the old must factor into what we’re seeing now - but also the V2 may not be transmitting video 24/7 and only processes it locally until something happens like a view request or trigger to record. If a year is possible, that’d probably be ok. But at the same time the perfect place to put cameras is pretty high up in our house soffits and that takes a ladder. Getting up on a ladder once a year is not a fun commitment to accept. So, that’s why I asked about the charge controller - I haven’t looked at the filing yet so didn’t know if there were images of the internals where the components could be researched. Thanks!

Hi Jason, I don't have one in my home. This is all from a filing so let's keep that in mind! I wish I had one. I can't be 100% sure of anything, but from the pictures and from what I've seen, I don't see a charge controller. Perhaps Wyze will sell one separately? I think the point is that the batteries can last people a long time with a single charge and you just bring it back to the base station for a quick charge one day out of the year. As for POE and ethernet, I feel like Wyze is going for their camera just modified for the outdoors. I don't think we're going to see a major divergence from what they have already...sadly. I wonder though, with POE if we can actually just do a convert to micro USB. Might take a specialized cable and not something I've looked into, but I don't see why not. Would you know that?

Wyze sucks‼️ Internet gets interrupted for whatever reason... your Motion and Sound recordings no longer function. Plus you can’t use it without Internet period... not even local access using WiFi only. 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻🇨🇳🦠🧻

Automate Your Life I have Spectrum and it cuts out every so often, but briefly. However, power outages here in SoCal (LA) happen unexpectedly or planned maintenance and anyone can cut off a circuit breaker which is why I run my modem, router& file server on a 1500VA UPS. I just hate cameras that do not work without continuous Internet. In this day and age, it seems unreasonable that most features wouldn’t work on WiFi only for those of us who want to ONLY use it internally (WiFi only).

I think it's fair advice you're giving Jason! Nothing wrong with what you're saying here. One thing I will say though...whenever I've asked, or seen people ask Wyze about being a security camera, their official response is actually that they don't make them for that. That's how folks use them! I guess the other question I have is...how often does your WiFi go down?
Jason
Jason 11 months ago
@Automate Your Life I have two that I use to monitor my young children. I wouldn't use these as "Security Cameras" as Wyze markets them to be. My advice to those who are considering these? Buy one at your local Lowe's and test it out. After feeling all warm and fuzzy, now power off your Modem and tell me your home is SAFE and you have some MOTION triggered video to provide to law enforcement to investigate your home being burglarized or robbed. Once you realize that Wyze cam failed to offer any level of security, go ahead and return it to Lowe's. You need only an hour to two to confirm my concerns. Choose a real security system for you home; Not Wyze. Don't get me wrong, they come in handy for other situations, but NOT home security.

Would be nice if there was a simple way to hook up a small solar panel to it similar to what Ring has on their cameras. I currently have one outdoor Ring camera over my front door with a solar panel attached to it that has allowed me to never have to charge the two batteries I have in the camera. Something like this would be a nice feature.

@Automate Your Life Sure... I dont think its anything special. but the settings in blink I have are. 30s retrigger time, 6 sensitivity (triggers are what kill the battery), 5s clip length and end clip early if motion stops. Honestly think it has more to do with limiting when and how it triggers than anything. AND not getting in the app and manually watching the feed. My cameras in the front of the house , specifically the one on the light pole to watch the street triggers dozens of times per night, and still lasts over a year. Oh, forgot the most important thing. IFTTT to arm them only when needed. 9pm to 7am for me. Thats the biggest obviously.

I have been using a regular wyze indoor camera outside mounted under the eves of my garage in a $12.00 weather proof case for the third cold Canadian winter and it’s been solid with no issues other then the power cord getting eaten by a bird. Good video and sound recording with strong signal (it’s about 25 feet from my house and another 15 feet from my router) and it has a solid signal with no gittery video unless I loose my router from a power outage. So I’m pleased with their quality and depending on price maybe I’ll upgrade but $50 total going strong outside after 3 winters in Canada is pretty good.

Any indication in the FCC filing of the field of view of the outdoor cam? I prefer the FOV of the pan cam to that of the V2. Any indication whether the lens is threaded like on the V2 and would be replaceable (for DIY fans) if its FOV is not to the user’s wishes? And do I understand correctly, you think you can either attach it to a mount with its standard tripod mount threads or with a magnet that would a affix to the mount and marry to a magnet that is built into the base of the outdoor cam? Lastly (sorry, asked this in a Facebook group but should consolidate it here) is the front of the outdoor cam flat, a single plane like on the V2? Or is it convex, bowed outward like a section of a sphere? Can’t tell from the photos. Thanks!
Automate Your Life
Automate Your Life Year ago
Hey Terry, good questions. Might have to go deeper in our monthly Q&A with some of these. 1. When I went into the details of the pictures, I did NOT see threads for the lens. It appears to be directly mounted and I don't believe it's removable. This is NOT a requirement of an FCC filing though and could be different. No FOV shown either, so beta testers would have the better understanding there. 2. The mounts is basically 3 fold. You have an option with the magnetic base to attach to a wall and/or ceiling. Then you have that threaded tripod mount. There would have to be a magnet directly built into the base, which I did see on some internal photos. So yep. 3. I see a SLIGHT bow out like the death star!

Ooooooh, tough question. I don't really have a good indication of pricing from any of the current leaks. I imagine the cameras itself will cost the same as the V2, or maybe have an extra $5 tacked on to them. I don't see anything here making them more expensive really. The base station is the thing I can't put my finger on. Another $30? $40? I can't imagine it's too much....

I am hoping that this base station can replace the Sense hub that currently plugs into the back of the indoor camera. Currently there is a way to plug the Sense hub into a Raspberry Pi running Home Assistant and Home Assistant can talk directly to the Sense sensors (no cloud needed). It would be very cool if Wyze has recognised this need and allows the base station to be plugged into a PC (or small computer) and talk to that system. We would then be able to use the Sense sensors and other things (like the cameras) without needing to connect to the cloud.

Good job as always, Brian. It looks like this camera will be a good candidate for one of the Blink/Ring style outdoor solar panels so you can mount it and not have to worry about getting out a ladder to get to it to recharge. I have one Ring and two Blink outdoor cameras mounted that way and in spite of not being in optimal sunlight at any point in the day, they work great. I just got the new Blink Mini and they also have plans for a local storage hub with no subscription required, of course. Hub storage would likely be easier to access on your network than the current SDCard storage it. So for me, the best setup is limited (free) cloud storage for security and quick access from anywhere and local storage for longer periods of time. I got the Wyze band which lets you do Wyze Shortcuts and Alexa voice actions so it ought to fit nicely with the Wyze outdoor cam.
