It amazes me how pop music(as a genre) continues to get less unique and more safe/structured yet sees exponential growth. Artists like Billie Eilish are considered 'alternative' and 'fresh' in this scene, but take away the grossly overproduced instrumentals and samples and edgy look and they blend right in.

We have a radio station here that plays old pop songs on Sundays. It's a miraculous gift. And not the cliched crap that is played to death, like classic rock does. What passes for pop now is an insult.

Ok, Rick... point taken. There are some well written pop songs these days. Dang it! It still goes against my grain deep down. I’m not a boomer either. Raised by boomers so maybe their mindset leaked in. Pop goes against my principals.

I've never got the hype behind Billie Eilish, people saying she's "scary" and her stuff just sounded bloopy and daft to me, didn't know what the big deal was. But listening to this one in the video, it does have something to it. Not bad. Still... I have to remain generally disappointed. These all seem like unfinished project ideas that someone said "that'll do" to. None of them suggest passion or pride to me. It's like a skyscraper competition where everyone stops at the first floor and agrees to share the prize. That happens a lot in pop, sure but where have the exceptions gone? There used to be exceptions that popped through and shone. Just don't see any these days, it's weird. A little intricacy please, pop. Something a bit more than a couple of riffs strung together. There's nothing wrong with a couple of riffs strung together when that works but sheesh, you don't want it to be ALL there is. Variety, c'mon! Where you got to? Additionally, besides even worrying about real instruments or not, where's the heavy? Where's that gone, too? It's so completely absent. Just one vibe to hang off is dull, and the one vibe nowadays seems to have been, for a very long time, sarcy self-superiority. It's vapid, and not even in a fun way. Are two or three people writing pretty much everything? I know that happens. Have they just got complacent about pretending otherwise, and forgot to sprinkle in some weird? I know I'm being a bit of an old woman shaking fist at cloud. Get off my lawn, lol. (I'd love to have a lawn, jealous lol) I'm... gonna go ahead and say that isn't such an embarrassing thing to be these days and just own it. I'm not wrong, am I? Do have a point, don't I? Nothing sparks any more. Seems like nothing wants to go to the trouble of being special. Of course there's plenty of great stuff below the upper skin, of course there is, always is. Music's wonderful. Pop's sometimes from time-to-time been a bit of a watered down representation of that (and occasionally a good representation). It's failed consistently enough recently that I've kinda lost faith in the pattern. Anyone else feel that way or am I just being a bit impatient?

The last song had a great backing track and interesting chord progressions but the vocal track seemed to have nothing to do with anything like it was just slapped on top. I was disappointed by the Ariana Grande song. Jeez, just pulled some canned tracks off the shelf and slapped it together. She has a lot of talent but it isn't being displayed.

Beato challenges me to keep an open mind. I’d never normally give two shits about any of these artists. So much of this music I’d never get excited about, but I love his openness towards it and he finds value in it. Beato is an actual artist and it shows in his integrity. Much to live up to here!

While I understand you/I/we need to be up-to-date in our understanding of current music trends, I simply find nearly all of our available crop to be so, so similar in tonality, dynamics, lyricisms, structure [especially] that it just blends from one to another. Where are the highlights that make an artist truly stand out from their peers? The first six or so songs on this all sound like the same group of people created and produced them barring male v female vocals. The underlying music is good but then trite, stilted vocals are patched onto something with some feel and........ pppffffttttt [Bill the Cat] dead as a doornail. Bieber sounds like Grande sounds like Eliesh sounds like Rodrigo... No wonder I don't listen to the radio or any streaming services. There are NO TRUE HITMAKERS any longer. And I'm not even talking about true musicians.... just hitmakers.

Definitely better than the last one. Olivia Rodrigo and Sza were real highlights. Nothing the last time made me smile, but these two did. I agree with your evaluation of Ariana Grande. She has a gorgeous voice with great range and skills -- why is she doing something so lame?

I get that Rick is just dissecting the music, different music than most of us are used to hearing on his channel. This music seems to be full of lament and is at a set level of emotion. I would much rather hear music the way it was being crafted back in the 70's and 80's. Lyrical content and chord use were more mature and worth listening to. The vocals were not full of how many notes you can sing in one bar, massively irritating. Why not compare yesterday's pop song construction to today's and see what happened to it? Find out why it's so whiny and uninspiring to listen to. Because the music side of it is pretty basic and simple which I suspect is only half of the problem.
Glauco Beall
Glauco Beall 2 days ago
Well...think maybe there's some good tunes, but... production is so standardized... same effects, transitions, that "autotune", R'n'B vocals... Diversified arrangements, and singers with personality, would make a big difference.

I’m absolutely shocked (positively) The last time I listened to the charts (years ago) it was just awful (most produced on a computer and basically on one chord) Now chord progressions, real guitar, drums and basses have come back. When will we hear some saxes, trumpets and bones in the hit parade? I’m waiting I just want to add that despite being positively impressed by these songs they are very forgettable when you compare them to the best songs from the 30’s and 40’s

should have paid attention bro. You can establish the key in the first 20 seconds even if you didnt have training, literally slide up and down the E string on a guitar or tap likely (based on pitch) areas on a piano. Once you have the key, theres what, 4 exceptionally likely chords to pick from? That should get you 90% of most songs down. the melody and chords will be intertwined too. I'm not trying to be negative here i just hate the idea that people read a comment like yours and decide not to even try. Did you really try? did you sit down with a list of songs recently and see how much you could figure out? Online there are lists of songs that build in complexity that people have put together for exactly this purpose!
