Should You Buy The New Wyze Outdoor Cam? Hint: It's Not For Everyone
The new Wyze Outdoor Camera and Base Station have both been launched in a $50 USD starter pack, but should you actually buy this new device from Wyze or should you hold off? That's what our video is all about today, and I think this video is 100% worth your time.
There are some things about the Wyze Outdoor Camera and the Base Station that surprised me, and they'll likely surprise you. I still think many of you will find a really great use case for your Wyze Outdoor Cameras, but some of the limitations will take some thought to overcome (and you might not be able to overcome them entirely).
So before you head to wyze.com/wyze-cam-outdoor.html, check here first of our #wyze #cam #outdoor purchase recommendation video.

Automate Your Life Thanks for another great review. I got excited and purchased one before this review..my mistake.. never considered they would reduce features...specifically not supporting recording to SD card after motion alert...I use that feature on other Wyze Cams I own...so unless they fix that, without cost to me, they may have lost a customer for future sales. I have their bulbs and some other items too..was going to purchase the thermometer, now will put that on hold. Live and learn for me.

I have a couple. The drawbacks you touched on are accurate but I also think that the pros far outweigh them. Also I have found that the battery life is far worse than Wyze let’s onto. But battery life is also affected by the settings that you set. Also Wyze has worked out with their latest firmware updates the resolution making the base station able to be ran without the Ethernet cord and run fully WiFi. My setup doesn’t call for that so I’m still connected. Some of the features though you missed are Ms A compatibility and fire tv capabilities. Price plus smart home integration for me equals no brained. I also has a V2 mounted with a wasserstein floodlight (super affordable and I highly recommend) and I love in upstate NY with plenty of winter under its belt

The 12 second limitation is ridiculous and makes the camera almost useless. When something walks by all you see is the butt. I had to pay $15/year to get Wyze Plus so I can get video that includes all the action. What that does at my busy location is to run the battery down in about 5 to 7 days. The workaround is to have an external battery bank in a weather proof container. I am just now trying a solar powered battery bank now to see how that works. The idea that we can't/shouldn't use continuous power is also ridiculous. It is as if Wyze is doing everything they can to make this camera worthless.

You know I just had an idea and want to see what you think. What if I got a wyze cam v3 then got a battery for it so it would be battery powered? Idk how long it would last or what battery to get though, but it could work, for like to see who’s at the door maybe?

@Automate Your Life yeah it seems really cool but I might just have to not do it, since it might be a bit to complicated for me! Absolutely. I would have to bet that there are about 5 million people who will get that camera and think the exact same thing. Many people did it with the V2s, and there was one setup I thought was OK to do. It's serious though! That was detailed here and I think the power requirements and setup will be similar: usposts.info/vision/l7DWsLnVfmuFd6o/video

Do you think this is a good camera to put by my front door to see who is there? I wish wyze made their doorbell battery. I hear a lot of people complaining how it takes very long to know someone is there. That’s not a problem for me right? Since the person would ring the door bell and I can pull it up? I have no clue on how to wire cameras(like v3) so do you think I should get these for my home to watch on it? I like the free cloud but idk if a thief could be gone in 15 seconds and done in one minute

BE FOREWARNED! They require $15 per camera, per year to use their CamPlus software or else camera is junk. As a security camera outdoors: without their CamPlus software, video recordings are 12 sec with a 5min cool down(you are not able to record for 5 minutes!) which cuts off useful footage! without their camplus subscription, person recognition is no more! this is a 1 or 2 megapixel camera, at best! They won’t respond when you ask them. Camera is ok but what bothered me plenty is that they are MISLEADING, MISLEADING, MISLEADING!

James Black
James Black 5 months ago
@Automate Your Life is the issue a plug in the back of the cam, or the plug in the wall... It seems like constantly powering/charging is the problem. Putting it on a smart plug would enable you to charge it whenever the battery is low or for a half hour once a week, etc. So basically it's plugged in but not being charged or powered by the plug until you turn the plug on.

Concept Good - execution non exsistant. I had two Outdoor Cams. Neither one ever worked correctly. Mostly just could not detect motion unless 2 - 3 feet away. Customer service tried to help to no avail. Maybe with lots of software updates it may work. Next issue - you cannot control the motion sensor zones like on the CamV2 or the BlinkXT2. Another no go for me.

I just got mine yesterday. HATE that you have to keep the base plugged into ethernet! that's INSANE! however, i was able to connect it to my wifi extender in the mudroom, as having the base hooked up to the router and the camera 25 feet away, it was impossible to see my camera 'live'. this is kind of a huge disappointment but not having to drill holes in my house and run more cables is a good tradeoff for these amateur hour screwups on wyze's part. like, they couldn't put the same tiny wireless sensor in the cameras in the base and make the base bigger? come on.

I've had it sitting out in the rain and at night and so far, it's excellent. I can't wait to get another one. I set it up for one minute intervals and have had no problem. Also have tried the travel mode and it worked. The battery usage is great, nothing like the Blink or Ring. Extremely sharp picture, day or night. Wish it was in a darker color so it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb. I'm going to paint it or use a tape for camp look.

I like Wyze Cameras and have a few. What I don't like is that I have to go fiddle with them to change the network or power cycle them to restore them occasionally. It's not a big deal if it's there on a table, but who has that? I have one under the eaves of my covered patio that requires a ladder to access. Whoever decided that power cycling a device was a good idea and has never had one stop working while out of country. How about having a routine that reboots the thing periodically or when it notices that it is not connected? So, I'm definitely not getting the outdoor camera if I have to get a ladder even once a year to slap it around. But, I'm especially not getting one until they sell an inexpensive, very weather proof, solar panel for it.

I have 8 Wyze (V1/V2 mixuture) cams around my house. Some indoor and some outdoor. Plus I have Wyze sense sensors on multi doors and other uses. I am an early adopter and big fan of these products. The Wyze outdoor cam I received through the first release has been somewhat of a disappointment to me for the following reasons: 1) The need to pull Ethernet cable through the house in order to get the Base Station close enough to a window to be effective. 2) The range between Base Station and Camera is listed in their FAQs as 300 feet for clear line of sight, but I am getting only about 30 feet of practical range when the base station is connected to my router in my networking closet. From that location the signal needs to travel through sheetrock layer, exterior wall sheathing, and then masonary fiber board siding. So I understand the difficulty for that signal. But to improve this, I need to plug Ethernet cabling and power to a location on the second floor near a window. That means the system is not really "Wireless" in my opinion 3) Range Limitations could be overcome if the cameras utilized my own WiFi network and not a base station architecture as I already have a MESH network around my property. But energy consumption concerns must have limited that option. 4) No way to power the camera with either solar panel or external battery pack without voiding my warranty. (But, then again - the warranty for the V2 cameras I have outside in an enclosure is probably voided already as well.) Bottom line is that after such a wait, the over all end product design is somewhat of a disappointment to me. This stuff is hard to do at the price point that Wyze is targeting, but putting out designs with this many limitations doesn't help their brand either. I'm still a big fan, just hoping that version 2 fixes some of these issues.

ontinuously recording to a micro SD card like Wyze Cam v2 will make the battery life extremely short. Because of this, we did not build this feature and Wyze Cam v2 is still the best option for this use case. However, we did build a "Scheduled Recording" feature where you can schedule specific times for the camera to continuously record to its local micro SD card or record when PIR is triggered though this will reduce battery life. This feature combined with Travel Mode will allow you to take the camera anywhere to record anything you want even if there is no WiFi available.

Understood, and I'm certainly not saying anything was done wrong with the design. It just means it doesn't fit some folks who probably would expect continuous recording. :)

The gate of my home is like 100 meters from my router, so I would have to install some kind of repeater with ethernet port to be able to use this? Or might be easier to install the repeater and use the wyze cam v2? For bigger homes I think this cameras are a bit complicated to install just because of the wired hub.

The good news with the outdoor cam is your ability to use it in a vacation mode. You wouldn't get notifications though.... I think here you have a couple of options. Run an ethernet cable and use a PoE camera, use a camera that is going straight to cell tower (4G usually right now), do what you said with the repeater but I don't overly recommend that. repeaters are usually less secure and less reliable.

With all the Wifi products people have in their homes this is a challenge most people don't realise until they start switching on these products on the same wifi network. For launch it makes sense to hardwire the base station. And there are plenty good ways to work around this. I think a good addition would have been to integrate with Zigbee / ZWave for automation hooks at home. But good review. Shame no Uk shipping yet :(

Plug in option thought... what if you had it plugged in all the time, but the cord was plugged in to a wyze smart plug that is set to turn it self on every 4.5 months and stay on for x number of hours to charge the camera, then turn itself off. ??
Automate Your Life

So it's a reasonable thing, but Wyze's stance is that there could be water ingress at that point and therefore...warranty....no more. At least that's the last thing I read!

The V2 is still better than the outdoor cam. it's half the price of the outdoor cam, can do CVR and plugged in 24/7/365 which means one time on ladder vs 3+ times per year per camera. the only thing the outdoor camera has is travel mode (maybe the base station too) so buying no more than one outdoor cam for traveling is a good choice but putting V2 outdoors is still the way to go.

They give you the screw on the base option instead of the magnets correct? Plus I like the rechargable batteries while the Blink you have to buy the new batteries and I read they really don’t last as long as they say.

Automate Your Life one last question on the Wyze outdoor camera. In their set up video it says not to install them in direct sunlight. Will that be a major issue?
Automate Your Life
Automate Your Life 9 months ago
Also, per Wyze, you are not to constantly recharge batteries with solar or any connection. Consider that to warranty!
Automate Your Life
Automate Your Life 9 months ago
I'm glad you have a plan! And listen, if you're happy, have considered the benefits/drawbacks, and are going to use it, that's great! My only advice is to consider the performance of rechargeable batteries over time and the fact that you're buying a $40 camera that is now tied to that performance.
Draw4Reel
Draw4Reel 9 months ago
Automate Your Life well, from some reviews I seen on Blink depending on usage the batteries can last not even four months. We plan on making the Wyze outdoor system long term. And we have a corner house so there is a lot of activity from cars and people walking during the evening. I don’t want to keep buying batteries. We have solar panels so we really should just recharge our batteries as opposed to just keep buying new ones. That’s my take. We could take advantage of Blink’s optional continuous power but we would be limited where we put them
Automate Your Life
Automate Your Life 9 months ago
Most people tell me the Blink ones last longer than they say...but it's all going to depend on usage/climate. I think my big worry with the rechargeable is...how does that go over time? We all know rechargeable batteries lose the ability to fully charge over time...so is this a 2 year, a 3 year, or...how long?

In regard to lack of continuous recording, their FAQs wyze.com/wyze-cam-outdoor.html#pageDetails state "Continuously recording to a micro SD card like Wyze Cam v2 will make the battery life extremely short. Because of this, we did not build this feature and Wyze Cam v2 is still the best option for this use case. However, we did build a "Scheduled Recording" feature where you can schedule specific times for the camera to continuously record to its local micro SD card or record when PIR is triggered though this will reduce battery life. This feature combined with Travel Mode will allow you to take the camera anywhere to record anything you want even if there is no WiFi available."

Their FAQs wyze.com/wyze-cam-outdoor.html#pageDetails state "The base station connects to your internet router via ethernet. This is to ensure the best and most reliable experience at launch. Allowing wireless base station connections to your router is a possibility that will require additional testing from us to verify that it can be done without harming connectivity." Could this mean that the outdoor cam at launch has the hardware for this?

Wyze Outdoor cam is not wire-free as Wyze stated, the base station needs a dedicated ethernet cable and even if you want to use just one outdoor cam you still need to have the base station with an ethernet cable connected, that is a deal breaker for me as all of my router ports are being used and I do not want to use another hub, I think I will stick with Wyze V2 with outdoor housings.

Definitely a NO BUY for me if the base station needs to be connected to the WiFi router at all time.
